Each day, I try to get outside for a walk or run (or other sport like cycling or basketball), and I often find myself debating whether to bring my phone and earbuds to listen to music, a podcast, or an audiobook … or to go tech-free.
Why Tech-Free Is My Favorite Option
Although I enjoy technology, tech-free is my favorite choice — and I’d like to share why.
The Value of Audiobooks and Podcasts
I do love listening to audiobooks and podcasts. I’ve spent many hours running or walking while listening and learning, and I believe it’s a valuable way to spend my time. So much goodness comes from this.
Music: A Heart-Lifting Companion
I also have a deep love for music, whether it’s enjoying old tunes, exploring new ones, or even dancing to what my kids are listening to … it lifts my heart and adds joy to my day.
Rediscovering the Joy of Going Tech-Free
Yet, going without technology has recently become my favorite option. It’s a joy I’ve rediscovered, and it brings me a deeper sense of connection.
A Greater Presence and Connection to Nature
When I go tech-free, I feel more present and open to the experiences around me. I feel more connected to nature, and I don’t miss out on simple moments like watching little kids playing in the park — those moments that make me smile. Life feels more wondrous and vibrant, in full color.
The Power of Tech-Free Thinking
Moreover, I’ve found that I do my best thinking during technology-free walks and runs. My most creative ideas come to me, and I find solutions to my toughest problems. I have deeper reflections on my own experiences. These moments of clarity are more valuable than any audiobook.
Stepping Outside the Comfort Bubble
Perhaps most importantly, going tech-free helps me step out оf my comfort bubble. Many оf us are connected tо technology from the moment we wake up, using іt tо stay іn touch with the world. While we may have brief moments оf disconnection, like when we shower оr cook (though some still listen tо music during these times), we often remain tethered tо our devices, even while eating оr commuting. Technology isn’t inherently bad — іt enables sо much good — but we often use іt tо insulate ourselves from the world. Breaking free from that bubble each day іs crucial tо maintaining our capacity tо engage with life as іt is. I’ve noticed this shrinking capacity іn many people.
A Daily Opportunity to Connect to the World Beyond Your Comfort Zone
Imagine what it would be like to have a daily moment where you’re fully connected to the world, stepping outside your comfort zone.
